so i'm a console gamer through and through. thats just how i roll. But i did enjoy emulating ps2 and ps1 games on my pc at higher than console resolutions before the hard drive went kaput (whatever i need a new pc anywho). It was also really convenient since i would just run the PC on my HDTV and switch between it and the PS3 depending on what i wanna do. I figured hey, i have some extra cash floating around in my paypal account so i'll buy a budget system with decent specs (3ghz dual core, enough ram) and then upgade the PSU and graphics card and tada! cheap gaming capable rig.
anyway finding deals didnt take long at all. For about 350-ish and less i can get a 3ghz system with maybe 2 or 3 gigs of RAM (even more in some cases) and enough HD space for my usage patterns. Of course they all come with shitty intergrated graphics so i'll have to invest in a standalone card--which probably means a new PSU as well. Anyway i found one i decided to pull the trigger on. But then....
What about a netbook? for the same price i can get uber portability and convenience. It would handle like 80% of my computing needs (web browsing, skype with forum friends, etc). The downside would be no gaming of course. And while i could easily upgrade a budget system into something capable of running some sweet action games, i still think my PC centered gaming will be relatively light. I am serious about getting into MMO gaming so maybe i'd try booting up Guild Wars again. Nothing too graphically intensive--i think like Half Life 2 would be the most intense thing i'd run. Maybe i'd get Crysis just because everyone gets crysis to see how far they can push the graphics sliders up XD
So yeah...i'm leaning toward building a cheap gaming rig but i cant deny the boredom destroying power of a netbook when youre out of the house or traveling. plus i'm on skype all the damn time now voice/video chatting with interwebs buddies so the built in webcam/mic is handy for that.
any input, suggestions, cautionary tales?
