So the Big Muff Pi by Electro Harmonix is easily the most recognizable fuzz box on the face of the planet. It has been around since forever, and i mean...shit...they STILL look like they're from the 70's XD look at that thing! its a fucking tank!
now i play progressive metal. "prog" in the 70's sense of the word, so more along the lines of Mastodon than say...firewind (lmao @ firewind! XD) So naturally i have a certain affinity for vintagey gear with tons of mojo. Back when i was using the ever popular EMGs in my SG, i was unable to get my amp into proper stoner domain, tone-wise. I needed that old school Laney/Marshall/Soldano mutt tone with girthy lower mids that roar like a lions den. In comes the Big Muff. volume at 12 o'clock, tone rolled all the way off, and sustain at 9 o'clock. Run the clean channel on my amp and punch that sucker and BOOM suddenly i'm Tony Iommi and busting out Iron Man riffs.
These days I use Seymour Duncan Blackouts in place of EMGs and they are GIRTHY fucking pickups! not only do they sound 50 times heavier than the EMGs but they have more dynamics than fucking passives! ridiculous beasts, they are, and i love them to death. anyway the blackouts plus the russian power tubes i'm currently using and my big muff is suddenly useless.
=( awww poor muff......but wait!
crank that tone knob to full. this makes the pedal sound like a fucking ice pick when run through a clean channel, but run it into an already dirty channel and suddenly you have a BITCH-TASTIC lead boost! scoop the mids on the amp if you wanna make things sound even more evil. its a good time
so i dunno what i wrote this for. i guess i just really like Big Muffs and wanted to share the love. i love fuzz pedals in general, actually. So many kids these days think if you wanna sound "metawl", you gotta run your high gain this into your high gain that and scoop your mids. honestly....NOTHING sounds heavier than a fucking old school gibson into a big muff and then to a 70's Fender Bassman head pushing a massive cabinet.
...that shit will level countries ._.
