I play, but I'm definitely not the greatest. Anyone else that does have any tips for me? Basically, I just need to improve speed and switching between chords. I'm practice, practice, practicing but wondering if there are any techniques out there that I don't have to pay $150 to obtain.

really we could go on and on about training regimen but what it ALL boils down to
and i mean all
is that
its all about muscle memory. basically the only way to BURN THIS SHIT INTO YOUR HANDS BRAIN is to play over and over
and over
and over
i'm dead serious. this is the only way to switch to a chord without thinking, to randomly bust out a pentatonic scale shred. its all muscle memory
edit: BTW where the hell are you in the AF music project? GET YO ASS IN GEAR! >=( man i'm in a weird mood today. as you can tell by the formatting, word choice, and demeanor of this post. verily

lol well i'm not one who should give advice on this stuff *majorly sucks at guitar T_T*
but one thing that helps is just to ALWAYS have a guitar in your hands. watching tv, surfing the net, whatever. just be constantly fiddling around. whether youre seriously practicing a new technique (i never do this T_T) or just messing around to see what cool riffs happen (i always do this ^_^), its always good to be playing SOMETHING.
Back when i was just starting one thing i could not do worth shit was sing while playing. well there's not really a coach or anything for that, so i just kind of followed my usual approach to stuff like this. I would just always be jamming like usual, except with singing as well. so to start out maybe just play whole notes and sing at pitch, then gradually play more complex riffs or sing more complex lines, with increasingly dissimilar riythms between the singing and playing. Playing in bands helped me keep this skill sharp too, as i was typically lead guitar AND vocals. I even did some vocals while playing a solo in a previous band
which brings me to another great point. NOTHING will improve your playing and overall ability to write and comprehend music like playing with other people. start a jam band, a serious band, whatever. playing with people regularly and having to adapt to the challenges is how you REALLY make the cut. sure practicing alone is the best way to sharpen your finer skills but there's just something magical about making music WITH people. My playing improves most rapidly and stays the sharpest when i'm in a band. too bad i havent been in one since like....1.5 years ago T_T.
but hey, i have the AF project! ^_^ anyway thats just my completely worthless 2 cents. take it or leave it (you should probably leave it!)

Well, it's a good idea to try to play at least a half an hour every day. But my trick when I was learning was to try to find all the shortcuts. A5, C, G, etc don't necessarily require you to move your index finger, etc. E to Emin is just a lift of the index finger. Basically just look for the laziest possible way to switch chords.
Other than that, Shay nailed it. Play. Play a lot. The only way to really hammer it in is to just keep playing. I've been playing for twelve years and I still border on suck. Half the time I'm convinced the only reason I'm lead in a band is due to le breasticles. Every band should have a chick. Which is why Shay finds them so easy, I think.

i'm not exactly sure what the insult is there...o.o;
but i disagree with the every band should have a chick thing. some bands are just about being big hairy viking men playing through walls of marshall full stacks. Although the chick in Kylesa sure holds her own in a band like that.
but back on topic: i also forgot to mention picking. Some people are HARDCORE about strict down-picking. while i agree that its useful SOMETIMES (like when you want a percussive sound) using just down picking is asking for trouble. at the very least learn to do strict alternate picking, tho even that is too confining for my faste. I'm a straight up economy picker. Economy picking is similar to alternate picking except when you change strings you use the most economical picking movement instead of the next part of the up-down-up-down sequence. Seriously you'll just be flying around the fretboard compared to your downpicking days!
the downside to economy picking is that its so effortless that its easy to rush by accident. i always have to hold myself back a little when playing triplets with string changes. otherwise it would sound like dadada-dadada-dadada instead of dadadadadadadadada
you see what i did there? I KNOW RIGHT!? pure genius

I tried to play guitar once in the summer...I was good but I think the next day...I lost feeling in my fingers. And well, I had no feeling for a few weeks. I would love to learn string instruments. (since I have a violin sitting in my bedroom) I think it would be amazing!
Well, I think the only tip I can really give you is just to practice and practice. The more you play, you have a higher chance of remembering the chords, the placing of your fingers and whatnot.

Here's the deal with that:
If you own a violin and a guitar (hypothetically), sell one. Unless you're some kind of crazy god-like sustance, both cannoth be learned. Or maybe you just can't learn violin after guitar. I've tried and it doesn't work. o.o

Here's a quote from my guitar god, Brent Hinds. I think it pretty much sums up what we discussed here. Its from a recent issue of Guitar Edge I have. Just for context, the interview took place over the phone while Hinds was back stage partying with Lamb of God and Metallica after a show:
"When someone wants advice about playing the guitar," Brent explains, "I tell them, you gotta get your head out of your ass, clean the crap off of it, and just play the damn guitar!" The celebratory ruckus in the background rises up again and Hinds has to shout to hear himself over the noise. "ITS ALL ABOUT AMBITION! IF YOU DON'T WANT IT BAD ENOUGH, YOU AIN'T GONNA GET IT! AND IF YOU WANT IT, YOU'VE GOTTA PLAY THE GUITAR A LOT IN ORDER TO BE GOOD!"
